When injury is getting in the way

Get clear on what is causing the problem — and what to do next

Sports injuries are not always straightforward. Some start suddenly. Others build gradually, settle for a while and return as soon as training increases again.

A recent injury

Pain or loss of function following training, competition or a change in activity.

Pain that keeps returning

Symptoms improve with rest but return when running, training or activity increases.

Rehabilitation has stalled

You have made progress but still cannot return confidently to your previous activity or performance level.

Not sure what assessment you need?

You do not need to decide whether your problem needs sports podiatry, physiotherapy, ultrasound or gait analysis before you contact us.

The Steps approach

A clearer route from injury to recovery

A sports injury can involve more than one factor. Pain may relate to the injured tissue itself, strength and capacity, joint function, training load, movement or a combination of these.

Assessment comes first. Further investigation or specialist testing is used when it is likely to change how the problem is managed.

Assessment first. Investigation when useful. Treatment based on the findings.

Your assessment pathway

From injury to return to activity

01

Understand

What happened, how symptoms behave, previous injuries, current training and what you want to get back to.

02

Assess

Relevant joint movement, strength, tendon or ligament tests, functional tasks and sport-specific assessment.

03

Investigate

Ultrasound or 3D gait assessment where further information is likely to add useful clinical value.

04

Treat & rehabilitate

A plan based on the findings, using the most appropriate combination of treatment and progressive rehabilitation.

05

Return

Progress towards activity, training and return-to-sport goals as capacity improves.

When we need more information

Advanced assessment when it can add useful information

Most sports injuries start with a clinical assessment. Further testing is used selectively when it can help clarify the problem or guide treatment.

Diagnostic foot and ankle ultrasound at Steps Podiatry & Gait

Diagnostic Foot & Ankle Ultrasound

A closer look at the injured area

Real-time imaging of selected tendons, ligaments, joints, plantar fascia and superficial soft tissues of the foot and ankle when imaging is likely to add useful information.

Functional 3D gait assessment at Steps Podiatry & Gait

Functional 3D Gait Assessment

A wider view of movement and capacity

Objective walking or running analysis combined with relevant lower-limb strength, joint movement and functional testing for selected persistent or complex problems.

Treatment & rehabilitation

A treatment plan built around what we find

The aim is to select the right combination of treatment and rehabilitation — not simply provide more treatment.

Specialist sports podiatry

For foot, ankle and lower-limb problems where specialist assessment of loading, footwear, foot function or biomechanics may guide treatment.

Gait, footwear & orthotic therapy

Used where assessment identifies a clinically relevant reason to change how load is being managed.

Shockwave therapy

Considered for selected persistent tendon and plantar heel conditions as part of a wider rehabilitation plan.

Running and gait assessment at Steps Podiatry & Gait

Running injuries

Persistent running injuries can need a wider view

Running-related pain does not always come down to one movement pattern or one part of the body.

Your running historySymptoms, distance, intensity, training changes, previous injuries and goals.
Strength & physical capacityRelevant strength, mobility and functional capacity where these may influence recovery.
Running gait — when relevantObjective 3D analysis where movement requires closer investigation.
A plan that fits your goalsRehabilitation, load modification, gait retraining, footwear or orthotic therapy where indicated.

Return to sport & activity

Recovery should lead somewhere

Reducing pain matters, but for an active patient it is rarely the only goal.

01 · TREATMENT GOALS

Settle the problem

Improve symptoms and restore the areas of function identified during assessment.

02 · ACTIVITY GOALS

Rebuild capacity

Progress strength, movement and tolerance for normal activity and training.

03 · RETURN-TO-SPORT GOALS

Return with confidence

Progress towards the speed, load, duration and movement demands of your chosen sport or activity.

Physiotherapy & Sports Rehabilitation

Physiotherapy will add progressive rehabilitation, strength and capacity development and structured return-to-activity planning to the sports injury pathway.

The aim is for podiatry and physiotherapy to work together where a patient would benefit from both areas of expertise.

Frequently asked questions

Sports injury assessment at Steps

Do I need to be an athlete?

No. The service is relevant to anyone whose injury is affecting running, sport, exercise, walking or other physical activity.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can contact or book directly. If another investigation or specialist opinion is more appropriate, this will be discussed with you.

Will I need an ultrasound scan?

Not necessarily. Diagnostic ultrasound is used for selected foot and ankle injuries when imaging is likely to add useful information to the clinical assessment or treatment plan.

Does every runner need a 3D gait assessment?

No. Most running injuries can begin with a clinical assessment. 3D gait analysis is used when more objective movement information is likely to be useful.

Will I receive treatment at my first appointment?

The priority is to understand the problem and agree a clear plan. Advice or initial rehabilitation may begin at the first appointment where appropriate.

Can podiatry and physiotherapy be used together?

Yes. From the physiotherapy launch in October 2026, selected problems can move between or combine both disciplines where that is clinically appropriate.
